Hannans Handicap – Ladies Day
The Kalgoorlie Boulder Racing Club’s premier event – The Round – features a week of horse racing and entertainment in the WA outback city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. After a controversial start, where the Boulder Cup meet was abandoned due to track problems, Wednesday’s Hannans Handicap saw a big crowd through the gates. Also known as “Ladies Day”, the punters were treated to a packed race card, after the $110,000 Goldline Distributors Boulder Cup (1760m) and the Boulder Promotion and Development Maiden (1300m) were added to the days’ races. But for some, the highlight of the day is the ECHO Fashions on the Field.
With generous prizes from businesses near and far – including a fashion wardrobe from ECHO, Devil’s Lair Fifth Leg Wine and Bella Yellowglen Vintage Sparkling White, donated by Treasury Wine Estates, vouchers from Indulge Cosmetics, Betts, Strandbags, and Travelworld Kalgoorlie, AND complimentary flowers and photography from In Bloom Floral Design and Gifts and The Pepper Tree Studio respectively – it’s little wonder there was no shortage of entrants.
And this years’ winner – looking beautiful in a beige dress with blue floral detail – was Kate Buchanan. Kate’s outfit epitomised classic, stylish, racewear. Congratulations to Kate, and also the runners-up and finalists.
Back to the horse races, and the results from the two feature events.
The Boulder Cup was won by Belora (No. 3), ridden by Shaun Mc Gruddy and trained by Daniel Morton. Amelia’s Dancer (2) and Amelia Storm (4) made up the places.
The headline race – the $130,000 KBRC Hannans Handicap – was won by Texan (No. 15), trained by Adam Durrant with Peter Knuckey on board. Placegetters were Reimbursement (2) and Zester (4).
As part of their work as the official photographers for the KBRC Race Round, The Pepper Tree Studio have been taking photographs over the race carnival, including professional portraits in their on-site studio. Couples and/or groups of up to four are able to have photos taken with studio lighting and a backdrop of the finishing post, with the photos printed on-the-spot to take home, or mailed the next day if you’re heading out for the night.
The Pepper Tree Studio will be back again on Saturday the 22nd of September for the $150,000 XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup, run over 2300m.
Photos will be added soon to the KBRC’s website.

In the meantime, here’s some shots from around the course at the Hannans Handicap.
